Disclaimer: Please note that my Japanese language skills are complete trash so a lot of the complex particulars went over my head. Please wait for a bilingual person’s reaction as well.

Anyway, I’ll start.

OH MY GODDDDDDD. It truly was a wonderful and quirky Anno film. Wow. Just.....wow.

I know everyone likes to make fun of Shinji being a little whiny brat or whatever...but he’s actually just a sheltered good boy. In Japan, it seems like a large number of fans agreed on asking this one question: “This time, will Shinji-kun truly get to be happy?” So of course, like probably many other folks, I went into the film wondering how Kaworu would (somehow) save the day and make Shinji happy. But the opposite happened. The opposite of the original TV series happened. It wasn’t about just Shinji finding happiness.

This time, SHINJI FOCUSED ON EVERYONE ELSE FINDING HAPPINESS FIRST. EVEN FOR KAWORU-KUN. I can’t Shoot, Shinji even helped his incredibly messed-up trash father.

Quick Rundown (in somewhat chronological order):

If you haven’t already, you can watch the first 12-minutes of the film on Khara’s official YouTube page. As you would see in that video, please take note that it is possible to reverse parts of the red wasteland world.

Asuka & Mari seem to be a clone-type series (just like the Ayanami series) which is why at the end of Q (3.0) neither Asuka nor “Ayanami Rei” needed a gas mask to walk around in the destroyed red earth areas. Actually, the long-term exposure causes Shinji-kun to pass out (Correction Edit: Asuka is basically an angel. She has a miniature restraining plug IN HER EYE under the eyepatch to keep her from going ‘beast mode’ in her Eva. Mari is the scientist that perfected LCL)

Toji, Kensuke, and Hikari are alive and well. They are at least in their late-20s now and living in a preserved countryside town in Japan. Toji+Hikari got married with a baby girl. Toji is the local town’s doctor. Kensuke is the tech-guy of the town. He still likes photography too.

“Ayanami Rei” is adorable. She learns everything from ZERO (like a baby in a teenager’s body) by helping the townsfolk ladies to farm. She also gets to see a cat and a baby for the first time. She learns words like “good night. Thank you. goodbye”. She also learns to smile.

Too bad that she is just an “Ayanami” series and can’t survive without proper maintenance. After learning and growing in the few months (?) that they’re in the small town, she turns into tang? Well, crap. Everything hurts and I’m dying.?

However, thanks to that “Ayanami Rei,” Shinji-kun got out of his depression and could accept everyone’s kindness towards him

Moving on...

Misato probably didn’t realize it then, but at the end of 2.0, Misato was PREGNANT. Kaji sacrificed himself around the end of 2.0 and died. Misato forgave him for that and named their son the exact same name—Kaji, Ryoji.

Shinji-kun meets (son) Kaji, who is now 14 years old. Kaji was given up for adoption so Misato-san could focus on both saving the world via WILLIE and keeping her son safe. This whole crap-life of a situation is what made Misato so angry and bitter at Shinji-kun those 14 years he was in space. It somehow kept her going, I guess. Anyway, (son) Kaji is a good boy who devotes himself to protecting the machines that keep the countryside towns from reverting back to red wastelands.

There are SO MANY REFERENCES to the TV series episodes 25-26 and End of Eva, HOWEVER, the results are more hopeful than the bleak End of Eva depression that we got the first time.

The grandiose final battle was SUPER LONG and there is no way that I can accurately describe it here. I can’t tell you a single thing about the mecha stuff, but all of the character-driven psychological analysis that happens on eps 25/26 & End of Eva, happens here. Instead of it happening to Shinji, Shinji analyzes everyone else including HIS FATHER GENDOU.

Gendou is just a hot mess...but after getting the eps 25/26 treatment, he realizes that he always had a part of Yui with him the whole time and it was who he threw away—Shinji-kun.

The whole End of Eva thing happens.... but in a new way. Not as much tang (Futsuyuji still got tanged, the poor guy lol).

Misato-san still goes BOOM, but in a super awesome baller way this time. In the South Pole, she freakin drives the ENTIRE WILLIE SHIP into the giant Q Rei who’s about to start “ANOTHER”(?) Impact. (Sorry, I totally lost count of how many freakin Near Impacts happen in this movie)

Gendou ends up merging with Yui in the South Pole at the end of the huge climax battle.

Oh. For those that like the “loop theory,” A LOT of footage was reused from the original tv series, End of Eva, and even the previous Rebuilds. But all of the dialogue was new. It was a pretty interesting and artistic-take lol.

Asuka got the whole psycho-analysis with the final End of Eva scene backdrop lol. Shinji-kun didn’t choke her though (thank GOD). He basically just checked if she was truly OK, and she was able to admit that she was super lonely the whole time. Earlier in the film, she apologized for “growing up before Shinji” and admits that she even had a crush on him when they were both teens (from 2.0). The only person who has been a stable, but non-forceful support for Asuka these 14 years was Kensuke. Shinji-kun said to please take care of him. ASUKAxKENSUKE CONFIRMED.

(Ok, I freakin LOVE Kaworu-kun so please excuse me while I cry a bit over him)

What we didn’t see from 1.0 was shown here. When Kaworu-kun woke up on the moon, he looked to his right and saw all of the times that he failed (the open caskets). He looked to his left and saw all of the times that he would be forced to repeat in never-ending loops (unopened caskets).

It seems like Kaworu-kun just convinced himself that making Shinji-kun happy was all that mattered....but Kaworu-kun was truly neglecting himself in the process. All of those speeches that he gave Shinji in the other films?? Kaworu-kun had to convince himself of those things too to keep himself going.? I’m not crying, you’re crying.

Yup. Even Kaworu-kun had his own trauma to deal with (I WANNA HUG HIMMM!!)

Kaworu-kun got surprised of Shinji-kun’s growth and determination. Then suddenly Kaji (father) came up and talked to Kaworu-kun about some stuff (I couldn’t totally follow this part, but I guess this explains that 3.0 preview at the end of 2.0). Kaworu-kun and Kaji (father) find solace in each other and that closes their psycho-analysis bit.

Did I mention that we get to see Kaworu-kun cry?!?! We literally see AN ANGEL CRY. I AM SO DONE

Anyway...

After the whole End of Eva psycho-analysis stuff and Shinji says goodbye to BOTH his mother & father, Shinji undoes the whole failed infinity series that most of humanity turned into (I think only WILLIE peeps were safe as they were locked away in special capsules that flew them outta the South Pole craziness)

Mari was safe too and came to find Shinji-kun, just like she promised she would

Mari did the whole freakin Little Mermaid emerge outta the water hair flip (lol) and then reunited with Shinji

the rest of humanity changed back into human beings again. Even animals changed back into their original forms and slowly descended from the sky because gravity quit lol? (it was done in a way that showed that they would safely land on the ground and not die on impact)

this is where Shinji-kun says “BYE BYE ALL OF EVANGELION” (yes, officially ALL of the angels were properly crucified along with all of the Evas in that final Rebuild End of Eva battle)

The End

Shinji-kun’s voice actor is changed into a more manly-sounding voice Shinji is a grown man (like probably early 30s) and waiting at a train station

Japan (and presumably the rest of the world) is back to normal, like as in OUR WORLD normal. No Evas. No NERV/WILLIE.

You can see on the other side of the platform a (presumably) human Kaworu-kun and Rei dressed like they are going out for a date or something You can only see Kaworu-kun’s smiling face, but that’s fine. ALL IS RIGHT WITH THE WORLD

Shinji-kun has a DSS choker on him for who knows what reason and then grown lady (also in her 30s) Mari playfully jumps up behind him and easily removed the DSS choker

Shinji is totally free and doesn’t owe anything to anyone anymore.

Mari says “c’mon, let’s go!!” which Shinji also echos. He grabs her extended hand and they happily run out of the train station together. SHINJIxMARI CONFIRMED.

the camera then pans to a bird’s eye view of a very normal-looking small town somewhere in Japan. The end

(Edit: Now that I think about it, the last scene of the film seemed to be a live-action shot of real-life Japan. Meaning that the “neon genesis” new beginning is LITERALLY our world. It was beautiful. )

TL; DR

“Imagine a comprehensible End of Eva where Shinji is calm and everything is explained” (quoted from niemand on Twitter)

The film strongly alludes that the “neon genesis” (new beginning) is literally OUR WORLD.

Random ramblings:

These 4 movies seem to be an alternative retelling of the original tv series & End of Eva more than an actual “loop theory”. I think what Anno did was make these movies a different branch (or world-line of) reality, while also positioning these films as a “sequel” to the original tv series & End of Eva.

There is no time travel. Shinji truly was in space for those 14 years and 14 years on earth passed as well. It was as simple as that.

The movie does not end in the “manga world” so that theory is also dead.

In my opinion, THRICE UPON A TIME just simply means that this is the 3rd and last time that Director Anno is giving us an ending for Evangelion.

In the last scene, you see Asuka separately sitting on the platform’s bench, Kaworu& Rei dressed up and talking to each other (I’m now convinced that they’re siblings and just about to go on a trip together), and then adult businessman Shinji and Mari who are in their late 20s/early 30s. The film makes it seem that ONLY Shinji & Mari remember everything that happened before (the Evas, Instrumentality, etc) so it would make sense that they would couple-up at the end. But we don’t know exactly how much time as passed by the final shot so their relationship is solidified by then.

That extra Mari manga chapter is CANON in the Rebuilds!! Futsuyuki literally holds that 1 photo of them from like 15yrs+ ago.

Anno once again completely shocked everyone. The manga is supposed to be its own separate retelling of Evangelion...and it is for the most part. The main manga chapters are separate from the TV series, old films, and Rebuilds except for 2 points:

that “special” Mari manga chapter is freaking canon in the Rebuilds (Sadamoto deceived us all when he said he just ‘drew that chapter for fun’)

Kaworu-kun is a looper so only he remembers all of his previous incarnations across all media forms of Evangelion. It’s my personal theory that manga-Kaworu is the first incarnation of all of the Kaworus because he is the most immature

Anyway, back to Mari and how she acts in the Rebuilds... I think the excuse for why she is so weird is a generalized personification of Japanese people who live abroad for long periods of time and then return to Japan. There is a somewhat prejudiced view of them as “no longer Japanese” or in short, they’re considered ‘weird.’

This is my guess on how Mari changed from her personality in the manga to how she acts in the Rebuilds.

ตอนดูจบนี่อิหยังวะเบาๆ กองเรือเรย์กับกองเรืออาสึกะเค้ารบกันมา 20 ปี มาริขี่เรือ wunder เหาะมาถล่มเรือคนอื่นยับ แต่พออ่านประวัติอันโนะ ก็พอเข้าใจได้
